Moving House During Daylight Saving in NSW: Plan Around the Light and the Heat
Start a daylight-saving move early, while Western Sydney is still cool, carry the heaviest items first, and keep the long evening for settling in at the new place.
If you're moving house in NSW during daylight saving, start early. The Bureau of Meteorology's Richmond RAAF climate statistics give a mean January temperature of 22.1°C at 9am and 28.5°C at 3pm. By our working, that's 6.4°C cooler at nine than at three (28.5 minus 22.1).
December runs the same way: 20.9°C at 9am against 27.5°C at 3pm, a 6.6°C gap by our working. Richmond is the nearest Western Sydney station in those tables, not a reading for your street. Still, the pattern is clear: the cool part of a summer day is the morning.
Daylight saving puts the extra light at the other end of the day. So the plan that works between now and April is simple. Do the heavy lifting in the morning and use the long evening to settle in.
When does daylight saving end? In NSW it ends at 3am AEDT on Sunday 4 April 2027, when clocks go back to 2am.
How daylight saving changes the shape of a moving day
-
Start time
Mean 9am, Richmond RAAF, January: 22.1°C
Heaviest items first, load the truck
- Mean 3pm, Richmond RAAF, January: 28.5°C Lighter loads, shade and water breaks
- Last-load time More daylight in the evening (NSW Government) Beds, kitchen box, unpacking
Daylight saving doesn't add an hour of light to the whole day. It moves an hour of it, giving more daylight in the evening and less in the morning.
That changes how you should plan the day. Don't assume a standard 8am to 4pm day. Set two times instead:
- Start time. Early is cooler, but the first half hour may be dimmer than you expect. Clear the path from the front door to the kerb the night before, and leave the porch light on.
- Last-load time. This is when the truck leaves the old place for the last time. Set it early enough that the evening light at the new place goes to the jobs that matter on night one: beds made, the kitchen box open, the kettle found.
Here's our advice at Sunnyholt Removals: when you book, fix both times together, not just the start.
How hot does Western Sydney get between October and March?
Nearest Western Sydney station, not a suburb reading
The heat builds month by month. Richmond RAAF climate statistics put the mean maximum at:
- 25.5°C in October
- 27.2°C in November
- 29.2°C in December
- 30.4°C in January
- 29.3°C in February
The coast is a poor guide for an inland move. At Sydney Observatory Hill, the Observatory Hill climate statistics give a January decile 9 maximum of 30.1°C. That is the level marking the hottest tenth of January days on the coast. Richmond's January mean maximum of 30.4°C sits above it. That comparison is ours, and the two tables cover different periods (1993 to 2026 and 1859 to 2020). Observatory Hill also averages 3.3 days of 30°C or more in January and 2.3 in February, and inland suburbs run hotter than that coastal station.
A hot-weather plan for moving day:
- Heaviest first. Fridge, washing machine, beds and anything going up stairs should go in the cool morning hours. If your new place has an internal staircase, our double-storey move guide covers how furniture gets up that staircase.
- Cooler hours for the outdoor work. SafeWork NSW's guidance for working outdoors without shade is to reschedule work to cooler times of the day, such as early morning or later afternoon. It also advises regular breaks in a cool, ventilated area. That guidance is written for employers, but the principle suits anyone carrying boxes in January.
- Water and shade ready before the first box moves. Put a filled esky in the shade, and keep one room at each house cool for breaks.
- Keep the heat-sensitive things with you. Pets, plants, medicines, candles and anything that melts belong in your air-conditioned car, not the back of a truck on a hot afternoon.
Which late-summer months bring the most rain?
- Line: mean days with 1mm or more of rain
By late summer, the risk shifts from heat to rain. At Richmond, mean rainfall is 84.2mm in January, 112.9mm in February and 103.0mm in March. Days with 1mm or more of rain run at 8.1, 8.6 and 9.0. February brings the most rain by volume, and March the most wet days.
A wet-weather plan costs little to set up and saves a lot on the day:
- Have plastic covers on mattresses and upholstered furniture before they leave the house.
- Lay drop cloths or flattened cardboard on hallway floors at both ends.
- Get the truck as close to a covered entry, carport or garage as the driveway allows.
- Keep one sealed box of towels and a change of clothes where you can reach it.

Temperature and rain figures: Richmond RAAF
The daylight-saving season runs 182 days by our count, from Sunday 4 October 2026 to Sunday 4 April 2027. Several fixed dates inside it shape when families move.
Summer school holidays. In the Eastern division they run Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. In the Western division they run to Wednesday 3 February 2027. That puts the most popular family moving window right on top of the hottest months. If you're moving schools as well as house, our guide to changing schools when you move house covers enrolment and catchments.
Christmas. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December, Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December, and the additional public holiday is Monday 28 December.
Easter. Good Friday 2027 is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March. The clock change falls the Sunday after.
Here's the season in short:
- October to December: long evenings and warming days.
- January and February: peak heat.
- March: the most wet days, so have the rain plan ready.
- After 4 April: darker evenings return.
What to reset when the clocks go back on 4 April 2027
Moving on the weekend of 3 to 4 April 2027 means the clocks go back overnight, at 3am AEDT to 2am AEST on the Sunday. Moving any time this season can also leave clocks wrong in a new home, because the last owner or tenant may never have changed them.
- Smartphones usually update automatically, but analogue clocks need adjusting by hand.
- ABC News adds that some appliances, including ovens and microwaves, also need a manual change.
- The NSW Government's tips for adjusting are to shift bedtime by 15 minutes a night, set non-automatic clocks before bed, and get outside in the morning light.
- The Sleep Health Foundation, as reported by ABC News, says it can take about a week to adjust to the new time.
A move plus a clock change in the same week is a lot. Give yourself an easy first few days in the new place.
Moving to Queensland, WA or the NT during daylight saving
- Observe daylight saving NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT
- Stay on standard time Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory
Not every state changes its clocks. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory stay on standard time, so a move from NSW to Queensland crosses a one-hour gap until daylight saving ends.
In practice, agree every time in writing and say which state's clock it refers to. That covers truck arrival, key collection and utility connections at the new address. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT observe daylight saving just as NSW does.
The daylight-saving moving season at a glance
Here are the figures that shape a move between now and April:
- Daylight saving ends on Sunday 4 April 2027.
- January at Richmond averages 22.1°C at 9am against 28.5°C at 3pm.
- The mean maximum peaks at 30.4°C in January.
- Rain days of 1mm or more climb to 9.0 in March.
- Queensland, WA and the NT keep standard time throughout.
