Changing Schools When You Move House in NSW: Enrolment, Catchments and the School Term
Changing schools is the part of a family move that runs on someone else's calendar: the new enrolment, your proof of address and the exit from the old school need lining up before the truck arrives, and the school holidays give you the cleanest gap to do it.
Should you move during the school holidays?
- Last day at the old school The day your child stops at one school
-
School holidays
Moving day
The truck in between
- First day at the new school The day they start at the next
If you can, yes. A move in the holidays lets a child finish a term at one school and start the next at another, with no half-week in a classroom they are about to leave. That is the cleanest break you can give them.
The holidays are not magic, though. Moving on the last Friday of term or the first day back still means a new class mid-year, and changing schools partway through a year can bring repeating or missing out on topics, along with leaving friends behind. So think of it as choosing your handover point: the day your child stops at one school and the day they start at the next, with the truck in between.
The 2026 spring break shows the shape. In 2026, Term 3 ended on Friday 25 September, the spring holidays run from Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October, and students return for Term 4 on Tuesday 13 October. Labour Day, Monday 5 October 2026, fell inside the break.
Two cautions before you lock anything in. A small number of schools near the Victorian and Queensland borders run different dates, and development days with no students may vary by school, so it's best to check locally. These are public school dates: if your child attends a Catholic, independent or private school, get its own calendar.
When is the next spring break?
- Monday 27 September to Friday 8 October 2027 Spring holidays
- Friday 24 September Term 3 ends for students
- Monday 4 October Labour Day, inside the break
- Monday 11 October Development day
- Tuesday 12 October Term 4 starts for students
The 2027 spring holidays run from Monday 27 September to Friday 8 October 2027. Term 3 ends for students on Friday 24 September, and Term 4 starts for students on Tuesday 12 October after a development day on Monday 11 October.
Labour Day 2027 is Monday 4 October 2027, so the long weekend sits inside the spring break again. A public holiday inside the break gives you an extra day at home for unpacking.
If the spring break is too soon, the summer holidays come first. Eastern division schools break from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, and Western division schools to Wednesday 3 February 2027.
How to change schools in NSW when you move
Start with the address. Every child is entitled to enrol in a NSW government school if their home is in the school's designated intake area and they are eligible, and the School Finder tool shows your new address and its local enrolment area on a map. Do this before you sign, not after.
Outside the area, it is a different deal. Schools can accept out-of-area enrolments only if places are available, with no guarantee. Criteria usually include siblings at the school, disability or additional needs, medical reasons and special interests such as language or music, so check each school's form and cut-off dates. If a primary school says no, you can appeal, which generally means a letter to the principal, so ask the school how its process works.
- An interview with the principal or a senior staff member
- Birth certificate or identity documents
- Proof of residential address
- An Australian Immunisation Register statement
- Any family law or court orders
- Medical or learning-support plans, where relevant
- Learning and support needs
- Allergies
- Medical conditions and anaphylaxis risk
- Uniform: ask at the interview
Upload the documents in the online application, and keep your child enrolled in one school at a time.
Next, the paperwork. Enrolment usually needs an interview with the principal or a senior staff member, and the school will usually want a birth certificate or identity documents, proof of residential address, an Australian Immunisation Register statement, any family law or court orders, and medical or learning-support plans where relevant. You can upload them in the online application.
Proof of address is the one that trips up timing. The school needs proof of your child's residential address, and you can only show it once the new place is yours, which is why moving day affects when you can enrol. Buyers can line this up with handover using our settlement-day guide. Renters have one less cost to juggle: since all renters can now use Smart Rental Bonds, you can transfer your existing bond to the new rental for a $25 administration and processing fee, plus any top-up if the new bond is higher, rather than find a second bond upfront.
Don't double up on schools to be safe, because the enrolment guidance says plainly: "You should only have your child enrolled in one school at any given time".
Finally, tell the new school what it needs to know: learning and support needs, allergies, medical conditions and anaphylaxis risk. Ask about uniform at the interview, so it is in the wardrobe before day one.
Moving with a Year 11 or 12 student
| Student | The transfer rule | A spring move |
|---|---|---|
| Years 7 to 10 | May transfer at any time | Any time |
| Year 11, Preliminary courses | May transfer at any time | Any time |
| HSC students changing schools and courses | Enter the new courses before 30 June of the year they sit the HSC | Well past 30 June: talk to both schools first |
| HSC students transferring on or before 30 June | Follow the new school's assessment program. The previous school passes on Stage 5 grades, Preliminary grades and HSC school-based assessment data | Talk to both schools first |
Senior years carry hard dates. Students in Years 7 to 10 may transfer at any time, but HSC students who change schools and courses must enter the new courses before 30 June of the year they sit the HSC. HSC students who transfer on or before 30 June follow the new school's assessment program, and the previous school passes on Stage 5 grades, Preliminary grades and HSC school-based assessment data.
Sunnyholt Removals' advice here is simple: talk to both schools before you choose a moving date. Under the rules, Year 11 students in Preliminary courses may transfer at any time, but a Year 12 student changing courses faces the 30 June cut-off, and a spring move falls well past it.
How to pack a child's room for moving day
This part is practical suggestion rather than rule. Pack a child's room last and unpack it first, so the most familiar space in the new house is ready on night one. Keep a first-night box with their bedding, a favourite toy and anything they need for school, and travel with it rather than loading it on the truck.
If the new place is a double-storey, decide early which bedroom they get and where their boxes land. Our guide to the double-storey move covers getting furniture up one internal staircase.
How to help kids settle after a move
Small children may not have the words. Sara Quinn, a clinical psychologist and president of the Australian Psychological Society, told ABC News that young children can find it harder to put feelings about a move into words, and recommended giving them space to talk rather than rushing into "fix-it mode".
Make the goodbyes real. The same ABC article suggests farewelling friends and scheduling contact after the move, looking at the new area and school online together, and using storybooks to prepare younger kids.
Watch what happens at school. Children may show they are struggling through behaviour, acting out or withdrawing. If problems persist, such as not going back to activities they enjoyed, the advice is to talk to a GP or the school psychologist.
