How to Choose a Removalist in Blacktown: Quote, Contract, Insurance and Parking
Choose a removalist on a written, itemised quote that gives the whole job rather than just an hourly rate, a contract that sets out dates and payment, insurance you have arranged for your own goods, and a plan for where the truck can legally stop.
The quote that tells you least is the one with only an hourly rate on it.
Two removalists can quote much the same hourly rate and still send very different bills, because a rate only prices an hour. The number of hours sets the total, and that depends on how well each one understands your move.
So compare what each removalist commits to in writing before you compare rates. Here is what we at Sunnyholt Removals would check if we were the ones booking a move in Blacktown or the suburbs around it: the quote, the contract, who insures your things, and where the truck can stop.
How to choose a removalist you can check
NSW Fair Trading suggests three ways to compare removalists. You can read independent customer reviews, ask friends and family, or check whether the removalist is accredited by the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA).
It adds a caveat worth keeping: “smaller removalists may not be part of AFRA”. Membership is one signal, not the whole test.
If a removalist does claim AFRA accreditation, you can check it with AFRA's Find a Removalist search by suburb or postcode. AFRA says all its members are accredited, have public liability insurance and are regularly audited. Fair Trading says accredited removalists must meet standards on equipment, vehicles, premises and staff training.
Whatever a removalist says about itself should be backed up. Removalists must not make false or misleading claims in advertising, and “any statement relating to qualifications or experience should be supported”. Ask to see it.
Removalist quote: hourly rate or fixed price?
- What an hourly quote gives you
- A rate for one hour
- What it leaves out
- The number of hours, which may be significantly more than first estimated without an inspection, or a detailed video or inventory (CHOICE)
- What settles it
- A fixed price, in writing, itemised (CHOICE, NSW Fair Trading)
An hourly quote is a rate per hour, not a quote for the number of hours the move takes.
The hours taken may be significantly more than first estimated. That risk is smaller when the removalist has inspected the property or you have supplied a detailed video or inventory. If you want certainty, ask for a fixed price.
An inventory does more than firm up the price. AFRA says a list of every item you want handled helps ensure an accurate quote. It also settles which items the removalist is responsible for and which you will take yourself. Walk through each room with your phone and you have both the video and the list.
Whichever way it is priced, get it on paper. Fair Trading says to always get a written quote, and make sure it is itemised, so every charge can be accounted for.
Two things can stretch a long day. Staff breaks required by law may also affect cost on longer moves, and access can add time, which is covered in the parking section below. For what goes into a typical local job, our guide to what a 3-bed house move costs in Blacktown picks up where this one stops.
What should be in writing before you book?
Fair Trading lists what the contract should hold: the service details, a household inventory, pick-up and delivery addresses, dates and times, how payment is made (including whether it is upfront) and any extra storage costs if there are delays.
CHOICE adds questions to ask while you compare: total cost and inclusions, hourly or flat rate, minimum charge, call-out fee, extras, deposit, how long the move will take, what happens in bad weather, and the cost of storage if there are delays.
The date matters more than it looks. Under Australian Consumer Law, a service must be completed within a reasonable time when none is set. What counts as reasonable depends on factors including busy periods and public holidays. Set the date and time in the contract so there is less to argue about.
It counts most around the holidays. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026 and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December, with an additional public holiday on Monday 28 December 2026.
The weather question is not idle either. NSW storm season runs September to April, so ask what happens if a storm hits on your day and what storage costs if the delivery has to wait.
If your move hangs on a property handover, our settlement day guide and settlement-day move planner help you set times you can put in the contract. Summer moves have their own timing problem, covered in moving house during daylight saving.
Removalist insurance: who covers what?
| Cover | What the source says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The removalist's own insurance | Not required by law to insure your property during a move; most only insure their vehicle for an accident | Check what their cover actually includes |
| Transit cover | Insures goods while packed and moved, including storage; a separate premium; extending it to storage costs more; AFRA-accredited removalists can provide transit insurance for all goods moved | Check whether it is “new for old” or value at the time of the move |
| Your home and contents policy | Almost all insurers in CHOICE's review offer some cover for contents in transit, but many don't cover accidental damage during the move; cover at both addresses usually 14 days, up to 60 days for some insurers | Check the transit, accidental damage and both-addresses clauses |
Removalists are not required by law to insure your property during a move, and most only insure their vehicle for an accident. Fair Trading recommends getting your own insurance.
Transit cover. This insures goods while they are packed and moved, including storage. It is a separate premium, and extending it to storage costs more. AFRA-accredited removalists can provide transit insurance for all goods moved.
Your home and contents policy. CHOICE found almost all home and contents insurers in its review offer some cover for contents in transit, but many don't cover accidental damage during the move. Cover at both addresses is usually for 14 days, and up to 60 days for some insurers. Find those two clauses in your policy before you book anything.
Replacement value. A damaged item is not paid out as new: the removalist's duty is to the item's value at the time of the move, which for most second-hand items is negligible. That is why new for old insurance is worth asking about.
Packing yourself. If you pack or unpack yourself and something is damaged, the removalist generally won't accept liability. Before anything goes into a box, photograph your valuables.
Moving truck parking: where can it stop on your street?
- 1Across a driveway
- 2Double parking
- 3Within 10 m of an intersection without lights, except the continuous side of a T-intersection
- 420 m before and 10 m after a crossing
- 520 m before and 10 m after a bus stop
- 6Nature strip, unless a sign says you can
- 7Heavy vehicle (over 4.5 tonnes GVM) or long vehicle (7.5 m or longer): cannot stop on a road in a built-up area for more than one hour
No parking zone: stop under 2 minutes, within 3 m of your vehicle, to load or unload
Loading zone: up to 30 minutes for a goods vehicle picking up or dropping off goods; enforced mainly by council officers
Permits and work zones: check with Blacktown City Council or ask your removalist.
A full-size removal truck has rules of its own. Heavy vehicles (over 4.5 tonnes GVM) or long vehicles (7.5 m or longer) cannot stop on a road in a built-up area for more than one hour. A house move rarely fits inside an hour, so ask your removalist how they plan the truck's position on the day.
Some spots are off limits altogether. You must not park across a driveway or double park, within 10 m of an intersection without traffic lights (except along the continuous side of a T-intersection), within 20 m before or 10 m after a pedestrian crossing or bus stop, or on nature strips unless a sign says you can.
Signed zones are short windows, not moving-day bays:
- In a "No parking" zone you may stop under 2 minutes, within 3 m of your vehicle, to load or unload.
- A loading zone allows up to 30 minutes for a goods vehicle picking up or dropping off goods. Council officers mainly enforce it, and the officer decides whether a move qualifies.
If you think the truck may need a permit or a work zone outside your place, check with Blacktown City Council or ask your removalist well before the day.
Access is also where quotes stretch. Where a big truck can't get close, a “ferry vehicle”, a smaller vehicle shuttling between the house and the truck, may be needed, and that adds time and cost. Tell every removalist you compare about steep driveways, cul-de-sacs, long carries from the kerb and internal stairs. Our double-storey move guide covers the staircase part.
What if something goes wrong?
The business can choose how to fix it, and you must give it the chance
Major if, for example, it would have stopped you buying had you known, it is substantially unfit for its purpose and cannot be fixed in a reasonable time, or it creates an unsafe situation
Keep your invoice or receipt, and photos of valuables taken before the move
Australian Consumer Law gives you a floor. Removalist services must be provided with due care and skill, be fit for the purpose, and be completed within a reasonable time when none is set. You are also entitled to proof of purchase, so keep the invoice or receipt.
How a problem is handled depends on its size. For a minor problem, the business can choose how to fix it and you must give it the chance. A problem is major if, for example, it would have stopped you buying had you known, it is substantially unfit for its purpose and cannot be fixed in a reasonable time, or it creates an unsafe situation.
If it comes to a complaint to NSW Fair Trading, include the details of the issue and copies of any correspondence showing how you tried to resolve it. The photos you took before packing belong in that file too.
Everything to check before you book, on one page
- Written and itemised (Fair Trading)
- Ask for a fixed price, because an hourly rate does not price the number of hours (CHOICE)
- Removalists not required by law to insure your property during a move (Fair Trading)
- Contents cover at both addresses usually 14 days, up to 60 days for some insurers (CHOICE)
- Over 4.5 tonnes GVM or 7.5 m or longer, cannot stop on a road in a built-up area for more than one hour (Transport NSW heavy vehicles page)
- Not within 10 m of an intersection without traffic lights, except the continuous side of a T-intersection
- Not within 20 m before or 10 m after a crossing or bus stop
- No parking zone, under 2 minutes within 3 m of your vehicle to load or unload
- Loading zone, up to 30 minutes for a goods vehicle (NSW parking rules)
Screenshot this and take it into every phone call. If a removalist can't answer a line on it in writing, that is your answer.
